The perfect road trip for the colder months

Home > Blog > The perfect road trip for the colder months

Don’t let the colder weather stop you from exploring the UK. With so many landscapes, coastal regions, and national parks there is something to explore all year round. With the colder months meaning fewer people on the road and low season accommodation prices, this time of year is the perfect time to plan a trip.

The Northern Lights

If you want the best sighting of the Northern Lights then the best place to go is Scotland. Offering a beautiful road trip any time of year Scotland is particularly beautiful in the winter period when the famous northern lights are in full view.

Plus if you are travelling in a campervan or motorhome why not incorporate an NC500 motorhome tour which goes along the northern coast?

The best time to see the Northern Lights is between October and March so ensure to pack enough layers to keep you warm! Aiming to travel as far north as possible will give you the best chance of seeing the lights, including places such as Shetlands, Orkney or Caithness. Caithness is not only one of the stops on NC500 road trip it is also the most northerly point in Scotland.

Yorkshire Moors

Start your road trip in the beautiful Yorkshire Moors. Announced as a national park in 1952, the Moors are a popular travel destination for its vast landscapes, outdoor activities and breathtaking historic attractions.

You could start your adventure at the Castle Howard, a gorgeous stately home at the edge of the North York Moors National Park. from there the attractions continue with the temples and gardens of Rievaulx Terrace only a short drive away.

The landscapes and history of Yorkshire do not stop there, with the Whitby and Ravenscar coasts nearby.

Lake District

The Lake District is the perfect destination for the colder months, known for its gorgeous waters and spectacular landscape it has quite possibly some of the world’s best scenic drives. The Lake District can be visited on both a short or long trip, with the Honister Pass and Kirkstone Pass being a must.

Not the mention the Castlerigg Stone Circle and some local towns such as Cockermouth and Kewwick.

For book lovers, the South Lakes is home to Beatrix Potter where you can visit her home in Hawkshead. Plus there is also Beatrix Potter World in Bowness-on-Windermere.

With its quiet country roads and harbourside villages, Cornwall has easily become a fan favourite to visit all year round. Boasting incredible beaches and history plus quaint villages Cornwall is perfect for an escape from day-to-day life.

A popular road trip to take is around the southwestern tip to arrive at Land’s End, with stops at seaside towns for pasties, cream teas or even fish and chips. We also recommend a trip to the Scilly Isles too!

If you are planning a trip this winter then rest assured it’s not much different to any other time of year. Yes, you may need to make sure to pack a few warmer essentials but the destinations you can visit are still endless. Make sure your campervan or motorhome has everything you need to keep you warm, including heaters and warm water heaters. Find everything you need to keep you warm on your campervan adventures with Nomadic Leisure.
